You are correct. I had some problem with config. It is distclean'ing
just fine now.

Ok, --with_openssl=yes worked.
My build host does have a pkg-config tool, but it replies with native
packages. My cross-compile tools do not have a pkg-config. I guess the
cross-compile case is more of a special case that needs the --with
options set more specifically.
