Excuse my ignorance, but is this the kind of thing that could be achieved
if one could write a custom c++ node? There are quite a few small nodes
like that in em_tools - Maybe it's beyond the API though..

references (as ICE port data type) are unfortunately not exposed in the
SDK, neither as input nor as ouput ports.
