fwiw, I can confirm that Solr 4.x can definitely not read indexes created with 1.4.
You'll get an exception like the following: Caused by: org.apache.lucene.index.IndexFormatTooOldException: Format version is not supported (resource: segment _16ofy in resource ChecksumIndexInput(MMapIndexInput(path="/var/opt/dcx/solr2/core-tex60l254lpachcjhtz4se-index2/data/index/segments_1dlof"))): 2.x. This version of Lucene only supports indexes created with release 3.0 and later. But as Erick mentioned, you could get away with optimizing the index with 3.x instead of re-indexing from scratch before moving on to 4.x - I think I did that once and it worked.
