UN Working on Resolutions for Ceasefire, Peace-Keeping Force The UN Security Council was working on draft resolutions Sunday to end hostilities in the Middle East and for the deployment of international troops in Lebanon, which the White House said would be ready "in days". All those killed in the northern Israeli town of Kfar Giladi were said to be reserve soldiers. Earlier, Israeli air strikes on the southern Lebanese village of Ansar killed at least six civilians. Three Chinese UN peacekeepers have been slightly wounded in southern Lebanon after mortars apparently fired by Hezbollah hit their headquarters. In a separate development, Israel says it has captured one of the Hezbollah fighters involved in the abduction of two of its soldiers. That's the incident that sparked the current conflict. Germany supports UN Mideast draft Chancellor Angela Merkel has expressed Germany's support for a draft United Nations resolution on the Middle East conflict. A spokesman for the chancellor described it as an important step towards ending military operations. The draft was presented to the Security Council after days of diplomatic wrangling between France and the United States. It calls for a full cessation of hostilities but it does not provide a timetable. It also calls for a UN-mandated force to be deployed to southern Lebanon. Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora says the draft isn't good enough. Israeli government spokesman Avi Pazner says Israel will continue its offensive until an international force is deployed. Observers say the Security Council could vote on the text as early as Monday. Israel detains Palestinian speaker Israeli security forces have detained Palestinian parliamentary speaker Aziz Dueik in a raid on his West Bank home. The Israeli military said it arrested Dueik because he is a leading member of the militant group Hamas. Israel has been holding many Hamas members, including several Palestinian Authority cabinet ministers since June. That's when gunmen from Hamas and two other militant groups kidnapped an Israeli soldier. Flash floods kill 100 in eastern Ethiopia More than 100 people have been killed by flash floods in eastern Ethiopia. As many as 10,000 people were displaced in and around the eastern Ethiopian town of Dire Dawa. A spokesman for Ethiopia's Disaster Prevention and Preparedness Agency said heavy rains had swollen nearby rivers which have overflowed and flooded the town. US court convenes on Iraqi rape case A US military court in Baghdad has begun a hearing to determine whether five American soldiers should be prosecuted for the alleged rape and murder of a 14-year old Iraqi girl. Three of the girl's family were also killed in the incident in the town of Mahmoudiya in March. The case is one of the worst incidents of alleged abuse of Iraqi civilians by American forces. Iran vows to continue nuclear activities Iran's top nuclear negotiator has said that his country will continue with its controversial nuclear work despite a UN resolution that calls for an end to enrichment activities. Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Ali Larijani described the resolution as illegal and said Iran would reject it. The UN Security Council has given Tehran until August 31 to end its nuclear activities or face possible sanctions. Western countries fear that Iran's activities could lead to the creation of a nuclear bomb, however Tehran insists its nuclear programme is peaceful. Sri Lankan military resumes attacks Sri Lankan government forces have resumed their offensive against Tamil Tiger rebels in the east of the island nation. Earlier in talks with a Norwegian peace envoy, the rebels had agreed to lift a blockade on water supplies that sparked the latest clashes with government troops. Rebel leaders also said that a 2002 truce brokered by Norway was still intact, however a spokesman said any further attacks by government forces would mean war. The rebels cut water supplies to government-held villages in the north-east last month prompting attacks by government troops. More than 400 people have been killed in the latest fighting. Cuban officials deny Castro has cancer Cuban government officials have denied reports that President Fidel Castro is suffering from stomach cancer. Vice President Carlos Lage told reporters that Castro was recovering well from his recent surgery to stem internal bleeding and would be resuming his duties in a few weeks time. Fidel Castro, who turns 80 next Sunday, temporarily handed over power to his brother Raul last Monday. Mexico's leftist candidate wants recount Mexico's leftist presidential candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is continuing to demand a full recount in the country's disputed presidential race. This, despite a ruling by Mexico's top electoral court granting only a partial review. In a speech to thousands of supporters, Lopez Obrador urged them to persist with demonstrations that have caused chaos in Mexico City since last Sunday. Conservative candidate Felipe Calderon won the election by a razor-thin victory, but Lopez Obrador says the vote was rigged. Scores dead in Pakistan bridge collapse In northwestern Pakistan at least 39 people have died after a crowded bridge collapsed as a result of heavy rains. Witnesses said around 200 people and a number of cars were on the bridge when it collapsed into a flooded stream. Several people were injured. Button wins Hungarian Grand Prix In sports: British Honda driver Jenson Button has won the Hungarian Grand Prix. Spain's Pedro de la Rosa of McLaren-Mercedes finished second, followed by German BMW-Sauber driver Nick Heidfeld in third. Both the leader of the drivers standings, Fernando Alonso of Renault, and his closest rival, German Ferrari driver Michael Schumacher, failed to finish the race.
