Scale of Serbian Cluster Bomb Problem Revealed for First Time Tue, 10/03/2009 | Time: 11:00 | 3 Terazije Square, 1st floor Ten years after the NATO bombing of Serbia, unexploded cluster munitions still represent a deadly threat to thousands of people living in 15 municipalities throughout the country. For the first time a survey conducted by Norwegian People’s Aid and funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs details the scope of the impact of these de facto landmines. An overview of the results of this survey; including the locations affected, the types of munitions present, the dangers posed to local populations and t he economic impact on surrounding communities from unexploded munitions will be presented by project experts. Journalists attending the conference will receive survey reports (available in both Serbian and English) and CDs with detailed information; including maps of affected areas and photographs of the types of munitions still present on Serbian soil. Interviewees on the day will include Serbian cluster bomb survivors and local and international experts and activists. The Cluster Munition Coalition (CMC), which represents more than 300 civil society groups worldwide, will take this opportunity to reiterate its call on the Serbian government to sign the Convention on Cluster Munitions, a global treaty that bans the weapon and opens the door to assistance from donors.
