Venezuela president to arrive in Belarus on official visit

MINSK - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez will for the first time pay an
official visit to Belarus on Saturday.

In the course of the visit Chavez plans to meet Belarussian President
Alexander Lukashenko, visit the Great Patriotic War Museum and the Stalin’s
Line historical-cultural complex.

Spokesman for the Belarussian Foreign Ministry Andrei Popov said, “In the
course of the Belarussian-Venezuelan summit the sides are expected to
discuss the key problems of international life, issues related to the
expansion of the two countries’
interaction in the United Nations and the Non-Alignment Movement, as well as
development of bilateral cooperation in a wide range of spheres.”

A big preparatory work preceded Chavez’ visit.

At the end of last year and this year several delegations from Venezuela
visited Belarus. According to the Belarussian Foreign Ministry, in the
run-up to the visit “a group of Venezuelan specialists arrived in Belarus
for joint work with the Belarussian partners on specification of mutual
interests and preparation of a number of documents on the establishment of
full-scale cooperation between the two countries for signing.”

Belarus and Venezuela had earlier maintained political contacts mainly at
the level of foreign ministers.

Bilateral trade-economic cooperation has been developing unstably. In
2004-2005 Belarussian potassium fertilizers accounted for a major portion in
the mutual trade turnover.

Last year the volume of bilateral trade exceeded 15 million US dollars.

However, judging by the results of the first four months of the current year
Belarus exported no products to Venezuela. Belarusian imports accounted for
just 6,000 dollars.
