My guess would be that either koan or spacewalk-koan cannot
correctly unpack the initrd.img that is to be used for re-provisioning.
Chances are that this initrd.img is packaged with xz (or even something
else), while koan may assumes gzip.

You should have a "public" channel and a 'private" channel.
Public being all top level channels, that will check in nightly, and
