Hi James,

I would be interested in joining the call on June 10th as a participant. After
the June 10th call we can discuss if it makes sense for SPDX to present at a
future Licensing Interest Group meeting. FYI- I’m based in Irvine, CA.

Please send the dial-in information for the June 10th call.

Best,

Paul Madick

While I have all of you on this thread, I thought I’d jump in to ask if anyone
is interested in a web-based speaking opportunity to California licensing and
transactional lawyers. I’m the Chair of the State Bar’s Licensing Interest
Group. We have monthly conference calls, built around a 15-20 minute
presentation on some interesting topic. SPDX did a presentation last year but
if there is something new or substantive to discuss we’d love to invite you.
The same goes for Rightsstatements.org<http://rightsstatements.org> (with which
I am familiar).

We also have long webinars of one hour that are part of the continuing legal
education program, if that is also of interest.

As for the conference calls, you do not have to be a speaker and you do not
have to be a California attorney; you are more than welcome to participate.
Let me know and I’ll send you the call-in information, too. The next one is
June 10th at noon, PDT. Maarten, I’m in Milan for the next month if you’d like
to talk sometime about your activities.

Best,

James

Hi Dennis,

Thanks for the reply and I agree it might not be the best fit for SPDX,
although with some creative thinking it could fall into the scope of the
project.

Rightsstatements.org<http://rightsstatements.org/> is not an identifier for
open works, like open source or open content. It is a way to more specifically
communicate that all rights are reserved. It is a machine readable format that
allows you to communicate an all rights reserved statement, with all it’s RDF
goodies attached.

I’m happy to have a short call (I’m on CET) to explain more about the project.

As for the list, I probably can’t offer as much assistance as I want to, I have
a lot of experience in open content, limitations and exceptions to copyright
and the public domain in Europe. Happy to help in any way possible.

Best,

Hi Maarten,
Thanks very much for communicating the various http://rightsstatements.org/
resources, which provide some deep analysis of copyright and licensing issues.
This is a lot for anyone to absorb quickly, and various members of the legal
group have added these resources to their reading lists. As you know, SPDX is
primarily about identifying and communicating the licenses that apply to
software, and is not about recommending licenses or interpreting the details of
license terms. It remains to be seen if any specific SPDX licenses are
identified from the resources that you provided.
Your interest in the SPDX legal group is greatly appreciated.

Hi,

I am new on SPDX legal list. I work at Kennisland, a think tank in the
Netherlands and work on copyright and technology issues. Mostly on the open
content aspects of licensing and hardly ever on open source issues. I also work
a Creative Commons Netherlands.

I understand SPDX list allows users to communicate in a uniform manner al sorts
of licences (mostly Open Source, but also Creative Commons’ licenses.). Are you
aware of rightsstatements.org<http://rightsstatements.org/> (where I am a
member of the technical working group).
Rightsstatements.org<http://rightsstatements.org/> tries to fill the gap of
clearly communicating that no licensing applies for in copyright works and
tries to explain to the user why that is. It has developed a set of 11
statements that helps to communicate that a given work is in copyright, that no
license applies. It tries to clearly communicate (human readable and machine
readable) that the rights holder is aware of the copyright issues and has made
a conscious choice in this.

http://rightsstatements.org/ has been developed by some large holders of linked
data like Europeana and the DP.LA<http://dp.la/> and partnered with Creative
Commons.

I am wondering if this fits the requirements/functionality of SPDX as it
stretches the concept of the list.

a full list of the statements, short identifiers can be found in our white
paper.
