Editing by Antonio Gagliano.* *Instigator of the first subcultural punk and LGTB movements in the former Yugoslavia, Marina Gržinić (b. Ljubljana, 1958) is the author of more than a dozen critical theory books as well as an artist with an extensive career in collaboration with Aina Šmid. Gržinić explores the different ways in which neoliberalism uses human death to fuel processes of commercialisation and surplus value. From Abu Ghraib to Lampedusa by way of the history of African culture and the dissolution of the former socialist block, she assembles a political vocabulary that seeks to unravel the effects of global aesthetics on people, drawing attention to the rise and normalisation of what she calls 'trophy-images': images rooted in the colonial legacy that display confinement, humiliation, and gratuitous brutality on racialised subjects.Timeline00:00 Empathy almost like retarded04:11 Pro-socialist, if this is possible to be said05:56 Video as a matrix: body an history09:12 Cinema: time, space and subjectivity12:35 The fall of expectations: from trophy image to school shootings14:48 Racialization of the image18:02 Space in the trophy image: prison and necropolitics20:39 Who can live and who should die?25:36 Foucault and the welfare state28:42 Dead connected with surplus value30:40 Lampedusa and necropolitical citizenship35:15 Amnesia, aphasia, seizure38:07 Necropolitics gets rid of history41:01 Vocabularies of radicality43:39 Deathscapes44:27 Borders and volumes45:26 Corpus and corpses47:22 Give me my intestines back*
