I got bitten by this yesterday as there is now a divergence between my gateway (mandrake 7.2 SNF) and my desktop system in terms on GLIBC. This is a pain but a simple work around is to enable static linking (meaning modem_run etc do not need shared libs to run). Simply ./configure --enable-static
