Chip,
I have the sinking feeling that they're all coming out of the same place. I
bought a set from Rimmer Bros. for a former Spitfire and while the
installation was easy, I was disappointed with the overall quality of the
carpet and the piece that would have been the nicest to be moulded (the ra
Hi,
I've been trying to get my Mk IV Spitfire runnung a bit smoother. I've
found the peoblem appears to be the rear carb (HS2 SU I think). It's
running too rich - if I lift the piston with the little rod, the enging
speeds up & smooths out noticably. However the mixture nut is already
wound as
Do all molded spitfire carpets come from Newton Commercial or are there
different manufacturers? I looked molded carpet today at Vickie Brits
and really did not care for its texture. I wasn't able to tell from the
box or instructions who manufactured it.

The engine is 'offset', but when looking along the head from the rear of
the chassis - it looks angled towards the left rear- therefore not truly
parallel.
I've sandblasted this thing and restored it -but can't see any evidence of
damage on the chassis or body.
All other parts fit back on true.
Wish it was that easy, Paul. But it looks to be a broken or displaced circlip
holding the stub axle inside the differential, allowing the axle to slip out
far enough to where the differential can't engage it. The weirdest thing is
that I had no clue other than a bit of rattling on the left side.
I disagree that the bearings disintegrated. If you check the service
manual, you'll see that the whole short shaft is held in place by a circlip
(#12 in Haynes, page 191). Looks like it let go.
You may not have to dismantle the diff completely - but then again it may
not hurt.
Cheers, Fred

I was under the impression there was a circlip
on the shaft, just inside the bearing. If the clip came
out of the groove it may still be there on the shaft
So pull the bearing plate carefully.

Single rail? 3 rail tranny? Is it possible the
rod (shift finger bolted to the rail) has come
loose and is not fully moving the shift forks?

Yes, to replace the bearing you'll need an hydraulic press and a strong
plate or else you'll bend the flange if the plate does not really curve
around the shaft as you push the bearings on and off the shaft. Guess
how I know!

Jeff,
I hope you can disassemble and find the clip that holds the bearing
in place on the stub shaft. I have changed these brg's and found it quite
difficult to remove the brg. from the shaft. While you're at it, there
couldn't be a better time to replace the seal.
That was my first thought/hope. But no, the bearing retention plate is in
place with the four allen bolts. Something internal on the diff let go...
Ugh, I really hate the thought of having to remove the differential, but I
have no choice. It was running really smooth, too. No whining or strang
It looks like the ball bearing that holds the stub axle in the differential
disintegrated. That bearing takes all the outward thrust loads.
In theory, you can replace the bearing without taking the entire differential
apart, but there is probably a significant amount of shrapnel inside the

Okay, here's part II. I went and took a look at the rear end and was
flabbergasted (and horrified) to see the axle coming out of the rear end on
the left side. The left rear wheel is sticking out almost two inches further
than it should be. Here's the photo:

Aside from the ebay thing. I always thought that some things like seals have
a limited shelf life, especially NOS ones from 30+ years ago. Don't you run
the risk of the "rubber" drying out and breaking down after an extremely
short use?
Could someone clarify for me please?

Ain't it great? We spend so many words in these newsgroups talking
tech that we (seem to) forget that driving these elderly (ahem!) cars
is what it is all about!

Well, changed the oil & filter this a/m, bright sunnyday here in N. Va. so I
went for a nice little drive, after 5 months under wraps I had almost
forgotten how nice that exhaust with the wind in your face, heck I don't give

I watch some of those auctions and can't believe it.
I email the winner and other bidders and tell them about our email lists, about
NASS, and about other parts suppliers. Many have written back thanking me for
letting them know. Most only make that costly mistake once.

My son has his 72 spitfire stored in one of my garages until he gets a

some damage to the interior. I need to find some parts to do the
