Is this possibly the difference for using a 21 vs the later 17 tooth
reverse idler gear? or is that only the GT6 laygear?
Supposedly Triumph went to a 17 tooth gear on later models
for reasons of tooth strength.

I had a closer look at the laygears I have and decided the new one is not
for a late Spit. If you know what it fits make me an offer. It's the one on
the right. Thirteen reverse teeth. The used one on the left has fifteen.

seeing if its teeth mesh with the blunt teeth. I suspect they might not mesh
