I found out by accident that the battery in my 1987 VW Scirroco 16V fits
perfectly in my Spitfire and does not hit the bonnet piece.

The battery from my 1987 VW Scirocco 16V fits perfectly in my 1980
Spitfire's battery box and it does have recessed battery terminals.

Jeff,
Why not drill one new hole to align with the reproduction badge? You'll
have to fill in a hole a touch up the paint but that spot should be covered
up by the reproduction badge.
