Axle stub removal...

2002-10-28 Thread Pettis, Ward (NIDCD)
Andre, Not sure why you want to take the stub axle out. You're probably like me, take every single part out and put it back together (if we can). I tried taking my stub axle out last winter with a big hammer and only succeeded in flattening the nut and the threads. If you want to paint the

Smokey, the cat - partial LBC

2002-09-20 Thread Pettis, Ward (NIDCD)
Smokey, our neighbor's cat (we feed him) brings all sorts of animals, including headless birds. He loves to sleep on my spitfire's tonneau cover!! Hey, hey, watch those claws!! FYI for those who live in the Mid-Atlantic area, my spit is in the shop, Yesteryear Motorsports, to do the U-joints

Tire Recomendation

2002-07-25 Thread Pettis, Ward (NIDCD)
Gerry, I got Yokohama Avid T4 for my Spitfire from TireRack, http://www.tirerack.com/index.jsp . These are performance all-season tires. They have good reviews, good ratings and good prices. They fit and look good. I haven't done much driving on them yet,

Seatbelts for 71 Spitfire

2002-07-23 Thread Pettis, Ward (NIDCD)
Jeff, Right now, I'm installing the seatbelts from Victoria British on my '76. I can tell you that the inertia unit and the shoulder belt guide can be mounted to the same places as the originals, however the anchor for the buckle will have to be drilled further back. If you look at the picture

Wheels

2002-07-15 Thread Pettis, Ward (NIDCD)
Henry, My understanding is that the slotted wheels are unique to the 1976 models (with higher compression engines than other 1500), all other spitfires had round holes. I like the look of the round holes, but probably shouldn't have swapped my slotted wheels away on my '76 Ward Date

Molded Carpet

2002-06-05 Thread Pettis, Ward (NIDCD)
I'm interested in getting molded carpet kits. I noticed Jeff's comment on TotallyTriumph.com that he wasn't too keen on the Rimmer's kit. Has anyone tried the carpets from ACC? http://www.accmats.com/main.html Anyone know the status of Magic Carpet Company? My inquiry to them today bounced ba

RE: steering knuckle joint

2002-05-17 Thread Pettis, Ward (NIDCD)
John, I ran into the same problem with my new steering coupling joint two weeks ago! I could see that the holes for the bolts were slightly off (thus "incorrectly manufactured") and was considering drilling or filing it to make it fit. Nearly gave up for the evening when I decided to flip it ar

Centering Steering Rack

2002-05-09 Thread Pettis, Ward (NIDCD)
While rebuilding the front suspension, I took out the steering rack to clean and paint. The instructions for putting it back said to look for the dimple or spot in the hole on the rack to center the rod. I've gone back and forth several times and was never able to find the dimple. Does the dim

RE: Waterpump question

2002-03-27 Thread Pettis, Ward (NIDCD)
Dave, Sounds like you're on the right track. I just took a look in the catalog and it does appear that the pump housing that you have would fit any spitfire. If you plan to use a fan for a MK3, then you would have to buy another water pump. If for the time being you want to use that water pump

Waterpump question

2002-03-27 Thread Pettis, Ward (NIDCD)
Dave, Did that water pump come off of your engine? If so, I'm beginning to wonder if you have a 1500 engine! I can't tell from your picture of the engine, but you might want to submit the head or engine block number to the spitfire list to make sure you know which engine you are working on befo
