Gel cel batteries meant for racing applications would be ideal for this application since they do not vent during charging and are safe for interior use. They are more expensive, mind you, but they do work nicely. They can also be mounted in any orientation including upside down, which may op

VW Beetles always had the battery in the passenger compartment under the rear seat. Never heard of them blowing up because of the gasses. What they used to do was short the posts on the metal springs when people would remove the battery cover. I don't think you'll have any problems. /// [EMAIL

Barry, As you said, the MG BGT is closed. However, for either B or BGT, the battery compartment is in the open air - there is a reasonably secure (although not totally air-tight) panel over the battery, but you can see the road beneath the battery - there is nothing beneath it beyond the minimum
