Did the oil pressure gauge go back to zero when you finally turned off the engine?
If so, then it is probably working OK. Simply replace the oil light sender unit;
it is almost certainly broken.
Water getting on the sender would have no effect. Consider driving in a rainstorm...

Finally, after a complete rebuild, she started with the twist of the key.
Shortly thereafter, I shut it down due to an oil pressure concern.
Prior to starting, I ran the pressure up using a drill attached to the oil
pump.
