Here's a couple for you, courtesy N.F.P.A. Handbook of Fire Protection
("Crosby-Fiske-Forster") circa 1954 Edition: "Smooth construction...The minimum
(deflector) distance should not be less than 3"...(Pg. 992). Also Pg. 992:
"(Vertical) Sidewall sprinklers are special-purpose sprinklers and ordinarily
should not be substituted for regular automatic sprinklers". For you
'kids', standard spray uprights and pendents were "high-tech", new hardware for
the sprinkler industry in 1954.
