I have an AHJ that is telling me to install an antifreeze system in a 13R
attic. They have an ordinance requiring attics to be protected in 13R and
13D systems if deemed appropriate by the fire marshal. I was under the
impression that after September of 2012 you could not install new
antifreeze
piping, and antifreeze.
All the antifreeze systems have expansion tanks, most with about a 2.5 gallon
non-UL listed tanks and only 4 have UL listed tanks. At least 2 of the units
have leaks at present. One with a UL listed Amtrol tank and 1 with a non-UL
plumbing expansion tank. The system with

antifreeze systems without listed solution, which at the present time is
not available. He is telling me that it just has to be premixed.

The reason I have no hair is local jurisdictions thinking they have a

I’m hearing jurisdictions saying that the antifreeze ban does not apply to
them. It is my understanding that NFPA intended for the new requirements to
apply regardless of what standard is in effect.
DO NOT INSTALL NEW ANTIFREEZE SYSTEMS AT THIS TIME.
Wait for the listed solution - but

That is what we are doing. The AHJ told the GC that antifreeze is much
cheaper. I basically told them if they want antifreeze, give the contract
to someone else, I won't put it in a residential use.

I throw this out for comment.
This comes a bit late, but I wonder if it is necessary to completely fill
the system. There is always some air trapped in wet pipe systems, and I
wonder how much is too much. Of course the system should be pressurized to
above supply pressure. If it were pressurize

The problem with not filling an AF system completely is that the air will leak
out and be replaced by water from the supply, diluting the mix at the service
entrance, which then eventually dissipates and brings the original protection

I see it is listed down to 40 F. Will the strainer not trap water?
