you can also use ifnull(myvar1,'') = ifnull(myvar2,'')
or something in the same way.
I used it for avoiding creating 2 queries for each cases.

yes, this is expected. Note that you use the = - operator in WHERE
maybenullcolumn = @value
and NULL = NULL evaluates to false.
This is SQL standard.
