Same thing happens for me. I used to have it work, but no longer.

I think you do need SB Player or similar. I havent used it for ages but
pretty sure you can tell it where your LMS server is (ip) and use the
vpn to connect.
Is there a bandwidth limiter ? Not sure.

I'd not bought the native SB player since it would be streaming from my
FLAC library and my requirements are for something more lightweight.

I've not used this method for ages but wanted a quick method of using my
android phone as a player.
In a browser or Foobar it connects and I can select it as a player in
LMS (Mozilla from [ip address]) but it only plays for a few seconds,
then stops.
If I try from a PC it says connection reset.
