Same problem exists
Now I don't have this problem with any other https podcast, such as the
Guardian's science weekly podcast,
The radio shows a "problem: can't connect to server for ..." message.

Yeah, that might likely be the issue I fixed about a week ago: the
stream is http, then changes to https - which LMS wasn't able to handle
before my fix.

This is not a https vs http error - this is a case of suddently http
conneciton broken while reading the mp3 data.
IIRC There was another very similar instance a few weeks ago with
another users but I couldn't track down the reason for the disconnect.
