starting, with following message in log file.

You need to pass your own CFLAGS settings to configure. See configure
--help.

been unsuccessful. Apparently the OpenLDAP that I

You're taking a simplistic view of what is happening during your benchmark.
When you say less then one minute you are clearly overworking your
cache. This isn't when cache_mem fills up...this is when the overload

Try /usr/sbin/squid -k check.
Or take away the 2/dev/null redirection from /etc/rc.d/init.d/squid
