This *might* be the same problem as I encountered recently, that in our case
(squid-2.6.STABLE17, no authentication) caused very slow loading of applets.
Here is the record from our task log that shows what we did to fix it. Hope it

(http://www.squid-cache.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=2176) against 2.6
STABLE17. Is it known to be fixed in 2.7 or 3.0?. Apologies for asking -
I haven't had time yet to go through changes logs for subsequent
