You could use squeezer script I wrote for searching bottlenecks and
optimizing Squid setup:

Hi,
if You have used Squid with transparent redirection and cancelled
redirecting - it means that your users don't use Squid at all now.
The lack of performance could be caused by many things. Check
out how Squid deals with DNS/reverse DNS. Do not setup squid for
users until you have proper ACLs
Wolf,
if you want to know what is squid's user experiencing (how fast
does he fetch files) - check out Squeezer script. It measures
transfer speed from various sources (Squid, peer caches, web
servers), compares them, helps to find bottlenecks. You could
find Squeezer from:

Paul,
the whole Polsih academic network uses Squid for web caching for
thousands of workstations in towns like Krakow, Poznan, Wroclaw,
Gdansk/Gdynia/Sopot or Silesian aglomeration. Check this out e.g.:

Wolf,
I think You could:
- simplify access control lists; every request goes through acl
until it matches any; so you should put those that matches most
at the beginning of ACL's if possible; You could also reduce the
number of acl matching pattrens;
- reduce the size of your spool; I think you sh
Hello Squid Users!
I have the pleasure to announce new version of Squeezer - logfile
analysis script. This is brand new version of this utility after 4 years.
Squeezer gathers information from access.log about Squid's
performance: hits, misses, traffic volume and - most important -
traffic s
