The cache_mem parameter is 10 MB so the cached objects in memory are 10 MB. The cache_dir is 10 GB so the cached objects on disk are 10 GB. Most likely squid is slow because of the I/O. If you have 16 GB of memory and a 64-bit OS and 64-bit Squid you can set cache_mem to 4 GB to have a lot more o
