You need to use http_port 80 and then make sure squid is started as root, with cache_effective_user set in the squid.conf to run as something non-root. A few systems actually run squid itself as a non-root user, and obviously this means you can't bind to port 80. Check the init script. :) Adr

Hi squid-users, I installed squid2.6 from ports, and , squid starting properly on 3128 I want to make squid to listen on port 80 , so I edited http_port 3128 to http_port 80 , and restarted it , but after changing the ports its not running tail /var/log/messgaes shows that it canot open HTTP PO
