Just for the record, I am using squid-2.5STABLE4 (I do plan to update
soon, it's just finding the time amongst my other duties). I can
access amazon.com through my squid proxy using MSIE and Firefox with
no difficulties, this is also true for BBC News.

I'm having the same problem. It seems to help a little to check Use HTTP 1.1
through proxy connections in MSIE. Not sure why. Isn't squid HTTP 1.0 only?

Just squid. Been running 24x7 for 3+ years without a hitch until this
particular issue. I haven't been able to find anything in access.log
or cache.log either. Very interesting...
