I'm having the same problem that many people seem to have had, but I can't find the answer by googling as yet. So, sorry for the repetitiveness...

I'm running Debian testing release, SM 1.5.0, xinetd 2.3.12, and UW imap of some flavor. When I try to log in to SM, I get the familiar "Unknown user or password incorrect", neither of which are true. The mail log gives me the old "Command stream end of file, while reading line user=<user> host=localhost [127.0.0.1]" error, 3 seconds after "imap service init from 127.0.0.1". netstat -an shows that the machine is listening on port 143 as well as 993.

So there's my setup and the symptoms. How do I go about debugging this? I'd rather be running 1.4.x, whatever the latest stable version of SM is, but I prefer not to install things outside of Debian whenever possible, and the stable version of Debian is still at 1.2.x.

TIA
