Should I add weight to Billy loco?

2001-05-19 Thread Shyvers, Steve
Here's a question for the List: I am finishing up a Roundhouse Billy chassis and boiler kit. It will have an American-style cab and other details. Now I am fabricating a non-functional saddle tank for it, and it occurred to me that the tank would be a good place to put some lead weights if I

Steve, Have you seen it slip with a load? (The oily tracks on a Saturday at Diamondhead would be a good time to test this.) If so, more weight would probably help. If it pulls a prototypical train without slipping, then you'd probably be wasting the engine's effort on dragging itself

Steve: I never gave it a thought, about being a hard adjustment. I guess because it's kit built, I had the valve covers off while making initial settings so I know my D valve is centered properly. If you wanted to visually check your valve settings you'd have to do considerable disassembly to

Bruce, No, I acquired it Thursday afternoon about three PM. This is for my employer, The Naples Depot. The 1244 bell is the third for The Depot, the others are mine personally, but have been pledged to The Depot as soon as they can raise the money to provide outdoor secure mounts to prevent

It depends. Steam it without the weight, and see how she pulls, and if she slips. I've got two roundhouse locos - an old Dylan, which no longer reflects its roots, save the nameplate, and a mogul which I built from the 0-6-0 boiler/chassis kit. Both have different running and pulling
