Casey,
Will do! I love to hear from men of experience and I never had such a
brilliant idea. I will be out in the streets tomorrow with a cart and
shovel. Steam driven cart of course. Is that how you collect it.
Geoff.

Hi All.
As a teenager, I increased both the power output and consistency of a
Bowman steam launch by screwing a fairly fat countersunk wood screw down
into the centre of each of the wicks, until the beginning of the
countersink head was touching the top of the wick. This lit normally, but

Does anyone know of a web site that has reproduced any of the catalogs of
the Gandy Manufacturing Co., Chicago Ill.
I'm trying to get authentication of the names of some track maintenance
tools believed to have been made by Gandy.
Keep your steam up!

Not sure if this went out earlier. Mr. Cole's SW minions at the
sslivesteam gates may have deflected it because of a formatting issue.
I'll try again:
I fully agree with the "wicks are vaporizing burners" concept. One of my

Based on the description supplied by the honorable Mr. Burns, those burners
seem to be very similar to the little (1 1/4"d) Primus burners in the Kenyon
gimbled alcohol stove I used for cooking during the eight years I was
"afloat" in my sail boat.
The two burners provided sufficient heat to prepar
Gentlemen and Geoff, I am lucky enough to own two "O" Ga. Bassett-Lowke
steamers. one is quite new and the other is old enough that the control arm
is in a slot thru the cab roof. Both use vaporizing burners. there is a
small wick beneath the burner tube which is lit first and then the vaporized

That's interesting Sir Art--if only I had a video of one of my locos a few
years ago, vaporized alcohol burning from the open fuel tank, the track and
the loco--strangely the only damage done was to my sweat shirt as it
wouldn't vaporize! It was a lovely harley Davidson sweat shirt but twere no

Geoff,
On this count I agree. I was taught that all flame was oxidizing
vapor, but on the vaporizing burner business I think you'll all find that's
a very, very old idea. Long forgotten (almost) or at least superceded, so

Hey youall out there, I wanna medal for starting up activity on
sslivesteam. I started with lubricators but folks are tired of all my
tirades on that but the wicks started all the info and ideas on
vaporizing burners.

Jim,
Thank you for confirming the operation of the alcohol vaporizing system.
The model boat people must have lost a few boats to fire with these
things, but they were operating on water. Hugh Boutell must have been a
brave man to run his loco on his indoor train layout.

I hear tell that the upcoming Aster "Berkshire" will have an alcohol
vaporizing burner.
Does anyone know for sure what this will look like ?
Peter.
