Richard,
Me again!~ After reading your comments I am sure more than ever that the
smithies type smoke/box boiler is not properly sealed. Particularly at the
backhead and also the opening in the smoke box for the blower pipe and
nozzle. So, a couple of Qs to confirm this to my friend.

I usually run with a 20 freight car train. I too use methanol. It takes about
8~10 minutes from light to safeties blowing. I whistle off when I see a "3" on
the gauge. (I do have a Bangham two chime whistle. Hee Hee) I usually have 3/4
glass of water when I start and leave the bypass open. Af
Clark, how many cars are you pulling? I get 50 to 60 min. pulling 30 cars
with ss wicks. This is also using methanol, not denatured alcohol. I run
mostly with the by-pass closed, as working that hard eats up some water.

Thanks Richard,
Perhaps this will help my friend who is condemning the loco 'cos he thinks
he knows so much! I'm getting quite aggravated with him,--as you well know
I am an Aster fan. (not a blower fan!) In some respects the C11 is like

I have all three of my Mikado wick tubes shrouded (with a brass tube that slips
inside the Aster wick tube) so that only 1/4 inch of wick is exposed. I get 1+
hour runs with this setup. The beauty of this setup is I can slide the shroud
up or down to change the exposed wick length without having

My Pannier has the rearmost wick tube plugged and it's noticeably more
docile yet there'
Hey Geoff,
There was a 12 month period when I was hanging out in Japan with the
Yokohama Live Steam crowd that there wasn't a place you could stand
that you didn't cast a shadow on at least one C11. They were very
popular because of the local appeal for that design, for the price,

Yo VGB,
I'll reply before Dave C scolds us for entering into the glory of larger
scales. Anyway, he got into a discussion on cameras, with which he used to
take some great pics of Dan's steamup--plus a little demonstration of a
what great closeups he could achieve. I think he is being paid a "fi

Having complete faith in you Gary, we did as you advise and the remains of
the C11 now reside in the upper branches of a 1000yr old redwood! Thanks

Yo Geoff;
My advice is very simple. Save the screwdriver for your O.S. equipment. All
you need is the hammer.

Well, uh, actually, I like running any steam loco I can get to run. Of
course some are less frustrating to get steam up or to maintain pressure . .

Geoff,
To improve your status in the mind of your friend, perhaps we could all
offer extreemely bogus off the wall advice. By comparison, your advice would
stand out as anchored in reality and perfectly reasonable to follow.
Advice for C11 from someone who has only seen photos of a JNR C11:

Does anyone out there have, or has owned, an Aster C11. If so what
comments do you have on the performance of this loco and any suggested
"tweaks" to improve performance.
Of course, as you all know, I know everything, but this is for a friend who
doesn't understand this des
