I experimented with different ways to glue coal together to form a dummy coal
load. I used real coal as I had a few lumps at home which I could break up
to get to the right size.
I tried a mix of Elmer's carpenter glue with a little water added, straight

I've never tried adjusting the alcohol feed on my Mikado. I usually open it
up a full turn and light the wicks. Can you get much in the way of speed
control (governor) from adjusting the alcohol feed?

Don,
If the safety's are popping off and you do not want to pull a heavier load,
or run faster, you can reduce the alcohol flow to cut the heat so you are
using the steam to run, not lift the safety valves.

I got this idea from a fellow at Diamondhead 2000. Try black aquarium
gravel instead of real coal. It looks the same but you don't have all the
coal dust and fuss breaking it up. Got mine from Walmart pet section.
Nah, doesn't smell right. Besides, what's wrong with coal dust on your
FYI - Aquarium filter charcol looks pretty good too. Also easy to come by.

I want to cover up the RC gear I've added to my Mikado. The gear is located
on the top of the tender in the alcohol fill area. I need to make a
removable "dome" which I can cover with coal. I've thought of foam but I
don't think it would hold up that long. Fiber glass is another option.
I have made many coal loads using real coal. If you take some coal and put
it in an old sock and smash, you get a bunch of small pieces. Make a base
out of wood or metal and create a temporary dam around it. Place your coal
inside and fill with a watered down solution of carpenters glue.
