I think it will need a Backshop valve plus the radiant burner to come out
right. The gas feed is beyond touchy.

Sounds like a clogged or dirty jet. Blow it out with air pressure if you
can. Seal the threads at the jet with teflon pipe dope.
Finally starting to like gas firing a bit more than before.
