I have not tried meths as a coal starter in the US. Have not
found any locally here. (Except I think I saw you using it at Sacremento
last year?).
However from observations on my UK visits, I suggest it does not flash off
the coal surface as fast as alcohol. It appears to be betw

I used boken up mesquite (not briquetes) charcoal soaked in meths in my
Shawe "JACK' ror years with excellent results -- just blow out the
fire on the shovel before stoking more charcoal!

Precisely, and the reason for my point in asking Jim about his "Lamp
oil" or
"Paraffin Oil".
Neither of these have been successful (for me), in producing enough
heat to ignite

The goal is to get the charcoal to burn. In some cases less stinky
and less smoky are desirable. Meths can be used instead of kerosene,
although the charcoal needs to be quite wet with the stuff... and it
