but a restart of sssd did fix the problem.
I need to turn up logging on these boxes so we can catch the problem there, but
until then this is all I have.

I finally solved this problem. The box where I was able to ssh to had UsePAM
yes in the sshd_config.

we re using sssd 1.3.0 with ldap authentication and as soon as we have
populated a lot of groups login just after reboot is very slow ( about
45 seconds ).
After the first initial login all the subsequent login are immediate.
