I've pulled the subject package down, unpacked it, then ln -s /usr/src/kernel-source-2.4.0-test5 /usr/src/linux; cd /usr/src/linux make dep; make bzImage make modules; make modules-install make install now, during the make boot stage, I get ld -m elf_i386 -Ttext 0x1000 -e startup_32 -o vmlinux
