I had a Hudl which was great and I could use FTDI to access my suunto s4i
whilst away from home. However , that’s now dead and I’m looking for another
option. I already have an iPad so I’m not looking for an expensive replacement
such as the Samsung’s.

That is unfortunately not the correct answer.
A lot of current phones with OTG support are currently NOT supported in
Subsurface with FTDI
