The "true" sunrise happens when you can already see the sun. At "true"
sunset, you can still see the sun. (assuming other conditions to be
helpful).
Under "normal" circumstances, the lower limb of the sun will be seen about
2/3 of a sun's diameter above the horizon at the times of astronomical

Hi all, and especially UK members of this
list
At the beginning of february I'll be attending a
meeting near Stafford (UK) . Are there any sundials to discover in that town or
around ?
Thanks in advance

Dear Dialists,
The interactive dial described below has elements similar to my Wenger
Sundial. The
user uses a finger or some pointer to find the current position of the sun
and then
using the analemma placed at each hour time the mean time is read. Since
the declination of
the sun is determined
Goodnes, how far off topic are we? But here goes. Rule of thumb for
tide rise; Take the total rise from low water to high water. Then in
the first hour the tide will rise 1/12 of the total; in the second,
2/12; in the third, 3/12; in the fourth, 3/12; in the fifth, 2/12 and in
the sixth hour, 1
I have read only today the messages concerning the Dali dials and the
Azimuthal dials (Arthur Carlson, etc).
The sundials described by Arthur Carlson in his messages coincide , I think,
with
the dials that I have called Monofilar and I have described in an article
published on "The Compendium"
I find useful this rule of thumb :
What is the Sidereal Time at a given time ?
S. T. (hours) = time (hours)- 12 + 2 x (number of months from March 21)
This is nice to know immediately what constellation passes the meridian at a
given time and roughly reproduce the sky using a map ...

When I was a deck cadet my chief officer told me the rule to calculate tha
approximate time of sunset:
When the the sun is near the orizon take you arm extended so your fingers be
parallel to the horizon.
Each finger is ten minutes to sunset.

"Rule of Thumb"
The phrase is almost certainly an allusion
to the fact that the first joint an adult
thumb measures roughly one inch,
literally a rule (or ruler)
yeah! loved the www.thumb.com site. Very busy indeed. I saw Thumb Wars on
TV, VERY funny.
About the term, "rule of thumb", does anybody know where it comes from? I
have heard (but not verified) that it came way back long ago from England (?
or elsewhere), and it was because a man could beat h
