Dear Dan,
The free open source software TriSph can directly compute this problem.
You can download it here :

Michael,
Some years ago, I spent a lot of time to search a simple geometrical
justification of these kind of dial. The best way I found is:
- for the Capuchin: from the orthographic projection of the celestial
sphere on the local meridian (fig. 1)
- for the Universal Capuchin: from the orthogra
plane sundial. Some brief instructions of
use can be found here:

Have a good use! Best regards

Hello John,
Although it is not a formula, you can use the "swiss knife" software
TriSph to obtain the hour angle (and also the legal hour) with the
configuration "Position triangle". You can download TriSph here:

Dear Nicola,
Many thanks for your wonderful Digital Gnomonic Links project I discover
following your message. It is a very great idea to publish these links that
are, for me, a major interest of the web.
Some months ago, I collected some links of this type.
You can find them at (with a little bit

Hi Tom,
If you want to compute a sundial without to take measurements, just to
understand the functioning of the software, you can use the simulation that
will calculate the measurements.

Hi Roderick,
You are right, it is the length of the side for a square dial. This label
has remained in French by error.
