Hello all:

I have finished the final architectural construction drawings of my sundial cupola. I found out that I will save a lot of money if I design and build it myself (except for the four porcelain sundial faces which are being made by a porcelain specialist).  The finest cupolas in the United States are made by the Amish in Ohio, but they quoted the cupola at $2,200.00.  I think I can make it for less than $500.00., not including the four sundials of course.

The entire cupola including the weathervane will be 95" (246cm) tall and 47" (119cm) wide. Each round porcelain sundial face will be 21" in diameter.  The cupola will be made of redwood that's painted to match the building. The tower roof, sills and eaves will be clad in 22 gauge copper sheeting.  The sundial frames and gnomons are 14 gauge copper sheet. The weathervane is also copper.  The copper parts will not be coated with lacquer so that they will patina naturally over time.

After investigating the best designs by others, I've come up with a design that is attractive, sturdy and uses materials of standard US dimensions that are easily found at any lumber yard.  If any of you would like to see my drawings and use them for your own cupola project, I will happily share them with you.  (Of course, you will have to modify the sundial designs for your own locations.)  I also have photos of the cardboard test model "in action".

If you would like me to send you the drawings and photos, please tell me off List and I will send you the file attachments. I can send you a PDF copy of the Delta Cad drawings.  Or of you want to modify my drawings, I can send you the original Delta Cad files or DXF files.  Please specify the types of drawing files you want.
