Hi Phil, this sundial, but in the form of circular box, was in use in the Roman era. The italian astronomer Padre Angelo Secchi published an article about a sundial like this in the Civiltà Cattolica" at the end of the XIX th century, about an real sundial found in a archeological excavation.

I just got a strange little sundial, its a coin, elliptical, about 1" by 1 3/8", apparently made of sterling silver. There is a hole through the coin at the sun marker, I assume for some sort of gnomon to be inserted.Across the top seems to be the months, and on the back it looks like a map of Europe with some city markings.http://www.yellott.com/sun/sun1.JPGhttp://www.yellott.com/sun/sun2.JPGI'd like to know how to use it, anyone know? I know being so small it will not be very accurate, especially since I am in the states (approx 31 degrees).Any help appreciated,Thanks!Phil Yellott
