I've heard of it happening occasionally... I don't see how this can
happen by the node file being corrupted, so maybe the freenet.ini...

Have you tried more recent builds?
Did it corrupt your peers file? (Do the nodes in your peers file no
longer have any IP addresses?)

Your node cannot self-restart because it hasn't been installed with the
wrapper. This means if it crashes (as it inevitably will) due to a JVM
bug, it will just exit. The easiest way to install it with the wrapper
is to use the gui installer...
