HI--I am new to computers and by nature and not techy at all! So trying to understand about the freenet the feeling is one of panic where i just dont understand terminology etc. I do however just want to ask some simple questions about Freenet, because i am all for no censorship of the net:

So, OK, I have PC and my browser is Firefox--which is really cool. Now IF I download Freenet what actually changes?
Do I still see the Firfox browser and Google search box, OR do I have a separate Freenet icon on Desktop I can ALTERNATIVELY use when I wish to be private for whatever reason. Ie--is it like having TWO modes of exploring the new--the usual one i have now and at a click I can go onto Freenet?

2)0when you say we give our bandwith (or something like that) do you mean we lose memory to Freenet? N9ot even sure if my question makes sense here owing to my confusion about termonology

I just want to have what I have but also have access when I choose to Freenet

Hi,

Here I got some answers for you:
Do I still see the Firfox browser and Google search box
Yes, you still have FireFox, but you need to configure in the FireFox preferences (options) its way to the net using Freenet (as a proxy… if the term
is new to you, you'll be able to find a definition for proxy in wikipedia)

In fact, you will be using your browser as an interface (connection) to Freenet.
But no, you want see Google search, you'll have to do your researches and whatever you want to do (mails, chat, etc)
inside Freenet (that is from and through all the connected Freenet users)

OR do I have a separate Freenet icon on Desktop I can ALTERNATIVELY use when I wish to be private for whatever reason
To be able to use alternatively Freenet or not, you can manually change each time the configuration in FireFox (that's a bit of a pain!)
or install one of the FireFox extentions to be able to change it by a click (that is using the direct connection, then using Freenet, then using Tor,
then using Jap, etc.) something like for instance switch proxy…
An other solution would be to have two different browsers, one dedicated to Freenet, for example Opera, and one dedicated to the normal navigation.
when you say we give our bandwith (or something like that) do you mean we lose memory to Freenet?
The bandwith has nothing to do with the memory, it is the capacity from your line to let pass a certain amount of data… if the data would be water,
one would speak of the size from the pipe ;-)

The bandwith depends:
from the state of the physical line (location, and quality of it)
from your contract with your ISP (limited anyway by the state of the line)
and the traffic on this line.

Let say that you can receive 145 KB/s, you can then calculate the time necessary to Download a file of 2MB (1MB±1000KB) to continue with the allegory,
let say that your pipe let 1 l/s flow through, you can calculate the time necessary to fill up your tub with 50 l. (but that'd be really fast, woah!).

If you let Freenet use a part of your bandwith, it means that if someone using you as a platform send to your computer (but just passing  through), let say
15KB/s, if your bandwith is 145 KB/s, you will then only be able to use for your own downloads 145 - 15 KB/s = 130 KB/s
of course one can decide the portion to lend to others, knowing that it also will monitor your speed through Freenet.

Hope it was clear… enjoy
