have to pass CC=, LD=, and so on to configure (but I'd try without them
first, hoping configure is smart enough to try to call $(HOST)-gcc first
before trying gcc).

blackhole. I've seen that thing happen way too many times, and the
workaround is almost always a MSS clamp (which is an ugly but
unfortunately necessary hack).

the original GTA01 u-boot, but that bug has been fixed for a very long
time).
I wouldn't remove them, however; just gzip the file, as long runs of
repeated bytes compress very well.
