How do I allow ICMP
protocol on a virtual IP setup on WAN interface? Port forward works on the IP,
but I cannot ping it, although I can ping the WAN interface.

Port forward the ICMP and make sure you create a rule allowing it.

Port forward to which IP? There is a rule created on WAN that allow
ICMP traffic.

If you need the firewall to answer the icmp directly you need vip type carp. if
you want a machine inside your LAN to answer the ping foreward icmp to this
machine.

To whatever machine you want to ping that accurately reflects the
meaning of the virtual IP. It's your network, you decide.
