it should work , I've downgraded older versions, can't see a reason it won't...
if it doesn't boot he probably wouldn't be interested in downgrading, but more in installing again! :P lol

I'm thinking something in /boot/ gets messed up and is causing this
problem so I am now nuking /boot/ in the updates. Let's see if this
helps.
