I thought it might be the 2-step authentication blocking it, but I created
an app password for it and im still getting SSL handshake failed.

use old-style SSL
connect port: 5222
connect server: talk.google.com
file transfer proxies: proxy.eu.jabber.org

yes! I reverted to requires encryption and NOW it works. thanks for the
