The Ctrl-5 was the key to solving this.

performed the deletion. I've seen this a lot. Close the address >book
and reopen with CTRL-5. Search for the entry in question, and if the
search fails, the deletion is complete. At the top of the address book
page, you should see a toolbar: New Contact, New List >Properties,
Compose, IM, Delete. If you've hidden it, you may have to reveal it:
View | Show/Hide | Address Book Toolbar. You can also right-click an
entry in the list, and the fourth option will be "Delete." >After you
approve ("are you sure?"), the entry should vanish. But as I said,
sometimes SM fails to update the display. If you navigate to a different
address book (click it in the left column) and then back, >you should
see the updated list.
