Comments Needed to Dump Dirty Diesel!

The thick, black smoke that billows from diesel trucks and construction
equipment not only smells awful but also is hazardous to our health. Diesel
pollution is linked to childhood asthma attacks, lung cancer, and even
deaths from heart and lung disease. While we're making progress cleaning up
new diesel trucks and buses, just one diesel bulldozer pollutes as much as
26 new cars.

In stark contrast to the rest of the Bush administration's record on the
environment, the Environmental Protection Agency has proposed strong
standards to reduce diesel pollution from new construction and other heavy
equipment. By requiring cleaner fuel and pollution controls similar to the
catalytic converters used on cars for decades, EPA has proposed cutting
emissions from new diesel equipment by more than 90 percent - a plan the
agency says would save thousands of lives each year.

However, diesel engine manufacturers want the EPA to further delay the rules
and exempt certain engine classes, such as smallest and largest engines,
from the requirements. This exemption would erode the public health benefits
since smaller engines comprise 48 percent of all "non-road" diesel engines
and larger engines produce a disproportionate amount of the pollution.

We need your help to make the diesel proposal a reality! The EPA is
accepting public comments on its proposal through August 20. Please take a
moment to ask the EPA to strengthen and quickly finalize these crucial
health protections.

Dear Acting EPA Administrator,

I am writing to urge you to strengthen and quickly finalize your proposal to
cut emissions from new diesel equipment, while in no way risking clean air
rules for trucks and buses.
Diesel air pollution is linked to childhood asthma, lung cancer, and
premature deaths. While we're making progress cleaning up new diesel trucks
and buses, just one diesel bulldozer pollutes as much as 26 new cars.

Specifically, I urge you to limit the sulfur in all "non-road" diesel fuel,
including the fuel used in locomotive and marine engines, to 15 parts per
million by 2010, and require all new diesel equipment, including the
smallest and largest engines, to use pollution controls that reduce soot by
at least 95 percent and smog by at least 90 percent no later than 2012.
Also, please extend the agency's commitment to abandon cost-benefit analyses
that discount the lives of seniors.

Thank you for your consideration.
