Acrolein is the alcohol of propene (ie propanol with a carbon double bond) and is the breakdown product of glycerol as you distill it at 290C. Addition of acid(Conc. H2SO4) to glycerol may accellerate the break-down. The acrolein can be retrieved with the same reflux still used to reclaim unused methanol or ethanol. I'm pretty sure that I already have been collecting acrolein when I accidentally leave the still attached as I heat the oil to 120C to dry it. Do any of the chemists out there know if acrolein can be substituted for the methanol or ethanol used to transesterify the veggy oil? Regards from Harry.
